Dry dog food is cheap, quick to serve, and nutritious, but is it healthy? Do you understand the label on the feed bag? How to choose high-quality feed? Master the 4 important principles of pet food composition analysis to protect your dog’s health.
Look at the ingredients and choose high-quality animal protein
The first step in choosing feeds is to look at the labels to see what the main ingredients are. Find the major ingredients (“Composition”) or raw material on the bag of feed. Usually, the order of the ingredients depends on how much of each one there is. Some high-quality meals list their ingredients in order of quantity.
Cats and dogs eat meat, so proteins are the most important part of their food. Animal and vegetable proteins are sources of protein (like peas, lentils, chickpeas, soybeans, etc.). Animal protein is better than plant-based protein because it has more of the amino acids that cats and dogs need. According to the components, most of the protein originates from animals or plants. Some high-quality feeds focus on how much animal protein is in the total amount of protein.
“Meat by-products” or “by-product meal” are some feed ingredients. Non-meat leftovers include lung, spleen, kidney, liver, brain, blood, bone, and other parts (except hair, hoofs, nails, horns, and teeth) (usually excluding hair, hoofs, nails, horns, and teeth). But “by-products” can be eaten. They are not too expensive to use as feed ingredients. Let’s say that the label for the main ingredient doesn’t say where the meat, meat by-products, meat meal, fat, etc. came from or what part of the meat it was. If only “poultry meat,” “poultry by-product meal,” “animal fat,” etc. are listed instead of “duck meat,” “chicken by-product powder,” “chicken fat,” etc., these may be raw materials of unknown origin that should be avoided.
Low carb is important, and so is the source of carbohydrates!
Cats and dogs get most of their nutrition from animal protein, and they don’t need a lot of carbs. Small amounts are added to the cat and dog diet to make it firmer, supply vitamins and help carbs do their jobs. For healthy cats and dogs, consider diets with less than 25% carbohydrate and less than 35% carbohydrate. This is not the case for diseases like renal insufficiency, which requires prescription feed.
A good feed should have a lot of protein and not much carbohydrate. Protein should also come from high-quality animal protein, and there should be many sources of carbs. Cats are more likely to get sick from grains like soy, corn, wheat, etc. If your dog has sensitive skin or a sensitive stomach, you shouldn’t use it. Instead, you should feed your dog food without grains.
Eat good oil, be healthy and energetic; eat the good fat, and your doggie’s fur will be brighter.
Active cats and dogs require high-quality protein, carbs, and fat in their feed. Cats and dogs can have healthy skin and bright-coloured coats if they eat good fat. When choosing feeds, choose fats with clear sources, like chicken fat, pig fat, herring oil, and flaxseed oil. If the source isn’t marked, don’t buy it.
Fish oil is strong in Omega-3 fatty acids including EPA and DHA Omega-3, which reduce inflammation and protect neurons. Some high-quality meals modify Omega-3 and Omega-6 amounts to improve cats’ and dogs’ health.
Natural fruits and vegetables and healthy ingredients, more balanced nutrition
The most important parts of the feed are high-quality animal protein, low-glycemic carbs, and good fat sources. Next, natural vegetables, fruits, and components are added to make the feed smell, taste, and work better, and to add vitamins, minerals, phytochemicals, and trace elements to make it healthier. Pomegranate, apple, sweet orange, carrot, spinach, blueberry, and cranberry are natural sources of vitamin A, vitamin C, iron, and antioxidants. Small doses of turmeric, rosemary, aloe vera, green tea, and alfalfa can keep cats and dogs healthy.
Cats need extra nutrients like taurine, which they can’t make on their own, to keep their hearts and eyes healthy. Cats and dogs can benefit from probiotics like inulin (chicory fibre), fructooligosaccharides (FOS), mannose oligosaccharides (MOS), psyllium, etc. Natural antioxidants like vitamin C and vitamin E can be used instead of artificial preservatives to keep cat and dog feed fresh.
